The Athletes Behind the Platform: Maggie Hatch

Some student-athletes are already living the next chapter while they finish this one. Maggie Hatch spends her season in net for Robert Morris ice hockey and her summer doing research at a children's hospital, with medical school waiting on the other side of a gap year. She is exactly the kind of person the Prospect HQ Student Ambassador Program was built for.

The program exists on a simple belief: the people who understand the student-athlete experience best are student-athletes themselves. Introducing Maggie Hatch

Tell us your name, school, sport, and graduation year.

Maggie Hatch, Robert Morris University, Ice Hockey. I finish my undergrad in 2026 and my fifth year in 2027.

What are your plans for the summer?

I've been doing a summer research internship at UPMC Children's Hospital of Pittsburgh.

How would your teammates describe you in three words?

Dedicated, genuine, hard-working.

What is something people would be surprised to learn about you?

I'm currently certified in phlebotomy.

What was your first job ever?

Either goalie coaching or Dek hockey scorekeeping. Both were with a goalie coach from Cleveland, and I honestly can't remember which came first, or if they started at the same time.

What do you think you want to do after graduation, and how certain are you really?

I'm planning on taking a gap year, then attend medical school to become a physician. Pretty certain, at least I really hope so.

What is something about being a student-athlete people don't talk about enough?

Navigating the off-season, especially based on individual needs. It means establishing a new routine, balancing academics, work, personal life, and sport, and prioritizing your identity and time away from the game.

What is one skill from sports that translates to the real world?

Collaboration.

What made you want to become a Prospect HQ Student Ambassador?

I wanted to be part of a growing organization that cares deeply about both the future careers and the current experiences of past, present, and future student-athletes. I also love connecting and networking with other student-athletes and learning from their journeys.

What would you tell someone nervous to put themselves out there?

Start small and go from there. Ask one question, reach out to one person, go to one game, join one activity, or take on a small role. Most people have been in your shoes and got where they are one step at a time. And there are way more people wanting to help you succeed than you think, especially in the world of student-athletes.

Favorite hype song before a game?

Tough question. I've had pretty much the same playlist since high school. CHANT by Macklemore is one of my favorites, but Glorious is up there too.
